Establishing a basic skills education program is like anything else in an
organization. You have to know what you’re doing. Also, it’s a good idea to
learn as much as you can before you begin. Many mangers lack information on
how to implement an effective basic skills program. As a result, the
following “How-To” resources are provided. Also, note that in our Network
link, you can contact people who have successfully implemented basic skills
training. Our hope is these resources will enable you to learn from
the experience of others.

Funding a Basic Skills Initiative - There are a number of government and
agency groups that will provide a variety of resources to fund Basic
Skills Initiatives.
Obtaining Support from Supervisors - The supervisor is often the most
critical person in the success of a basic skills training program. This

Motivating Employee to Participate - Many employees are reluctant to
participate in training programs for a variety of reasons. This resource
describes techniques employers have can use to encourage their employees to
be interested in learning.
Teaching the Adult Learner
Determining Basic Skill Needs - There are a number of methods to
determine if a basic skills problems needs to be addressed. This
resource provides information on the different methods as well as
advantages and disadvantages of each.
Locating Local Support Services - Employers will find that there are a
number of support services available to assist in addressing a basic
skills training need. This resource reviews and describes the services
available to employers.
